New Bern Bears Sweep New Hanover in Straight Sets
New Hanover
Lady Bears Volleyball improved to 2-0 on the young season with a decisive 3-0 non-conference victory over the visiting New Hanover Wildcats on Thursday evening at New Bern High School.
The Bears dominated early, taking the first two sets comfortably at 25-12 and 25-17 before holding off a late push from New Hanover in a tighter third set, 26-24.
Junior setter Mary Alice Evans had 34 assists in the three-set win. Evans ran the offense efficiently as the Bears recorded 35 team assists and 35 kills.
Senior outside hitter Louisa Reno led the attack with 8 kills, while junior middle/right-side hitter Charlotte Smith added 7 kills on an efficient .455 hitting percentage and contributed 3 total blocks. New Bern finished with 9 service aces, 76 digs, and 4 total blocks as a team.
The Bears controlled the match from the opening serve, limiting New Hanover’s attack while maintaining consistent side-out efficiency and defensive pressure. The third set proved the most competitive, but New Bern closed it out to complete the sweep.
New Bern continues its early-season non-conference slate after opening with a win over West Craven earlier in the week.
