Pamlico County Volleyball Edges West Craven in Four Sets

VANCEBORO, N.C. — The Pamlico County Hurricanes continued their strong start to the season with a 3-1 non-conference victory over West Craven on Wednesday night.

Pamlico County took the first set 25-17, dropped the second 19-25, then closed out the match with 25-17 and 25-13 wins. The Hurricanes improved to 4-1, while the Eagles fell to 1-4.

Senior outside hitter Haley Gibbs-Ireland led Pamlico County with a match-high 16 kills and hit .344. Sophomore Avery Hettinger added 13 kills (.290 hitting percentage) along with 14 digs and two service aces. Junior Brooklyn Schulz contributed 12 kills and 16 digs, while senior Sydney Whitley-Reese finished with 10 kills on an efficient .368 hitting percentage and three blocks.

Setter Lila Mehring distributed the ball effectively with 37 assists. Libero Emma Charles-Craft anchored the defense with 25 digs, and middle blocker Ava Nunley recorded four total blocks.

As a team, Pamlico County finished with 54 kills, seven total blocks, five service aces, 76 digs and 53 assists.

West Craven showed resilience by capturing the second set and forcing Pamlico County to work for the win. Individual statistics for the Eagles were not available at the time of reporting, but the home team’s ability to steal a set demonstrated competitive effort against a Hurricanes squad that has now won four of its first five matches.
