Football Week 1 Stand-Out: Kavin "Duke" Magwood of New Bern

NEW BERN, N.C. — Some performances don’t just win a game. They announce a season.

On Monday night against New Hanover, Karvin “Duke” Magwood did exactly that.

The New Bern senior ran for 264 yards on 17 carries, scored twice on the ground, then added four catches for 34 yards and another touchdown. Three scores. Nearly 300 yards from scrimmage. One opening-night masterpiece in a 48-9 Bears win.

Magwood was not grinding out four-yard runs and hoping the defense got tired. He was breaking them. He averaged more than 15 yards every time he touched the ball on the ground, turning first-down looks into field-tilting explosions.

Then he did it through the air, too. When New Hanover started loading the box, Magwood slipped into the passing game and made them pay. Four receptions. Thirty-four yards. A receiving touchdown. That is not a running back surviving. That is a playmaker taking over every phase he is asked to handle.

Great nights in high school football are not just about the stat line. They are about the message. Magwood’s message was simple: this backfield is a problem, this offense has an identity, and New Bern is not easing into August.
